Positivity Reading and Audio Recommendations

To help move forward with healing, I often read books with my patients, or have them listen to lectures that we will discuss together.

I have found the works below to be excellent to help the process of reframing negative messages and creating positive out of negative messages.

Please read the descriptions below, and choose the titles that you think will be most suited for you. If you have time, feel free to read/listen to them all. All good information complements each other —the more positive ideas you bring into your life, the less room your brain has for negativity and the more your brain will create positive thinking patterns. Remember the brain is an organ that can remold itself. This means no nerve pathway and thought pattern is hard-wired. With practice and new ideas, you can create new habits of thinking.

If you enjoy these then check back from time to time. I will be adding to this list regularly.

Books and Audio

Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing

Author: Dr. Caroline Myss 1996. Crown Publishers

Anatomy of the Spirit is a landmark book in understanding how our energy areas of our body (called Chakras) can easily lose energy, and can contribute to all different types of diseases including depression and emotional challenges. Dr. Myss synthesizes the ideas from different ancient traditions to help us understand how to cultivate our spiritual growth.

Who should read this: if you feel out of touch with your body and have little knowledge about your energetic self.

Creating Your Life with Your Thoughts (Audio)

Author: Dr. Wayne Dyer, Inner Wisdom, Audio 2008

While this is a wonderful listen, I would also recommend you visit his website (www.drwaynedyer.com) and take a look at all the other titles. Dr. Wayne Dyer is affectionately called the "father of motivation" by his fans. Dr. Dyer has overcome many obstacles to make his dreams come true and spends much of his time showing others how to do the same.

Who Should Listen to This: Anyone who recognizes she or he has negative messages to change.

Don't Bite the Hook: Finding Freedom from Anger, Resentment, and Other Destructive Emotions (MP3 Audio)

Author: Pema Chödrön, Shambala Audio, 2007

In this lecture series, Pema Chodron , the first western woman to become a Tibetan monk, deals with the bases of anger, and how we can learn from anger, instead of letting it automatically control us. Some say depression is anger turned inward, and this lecture can help you constructively reveal the anger you may have buried, and learn to identify it and diffuse it as it comes up, instead of letting it run amok.

Who should listen to this: If you are outwardly angry, or feel you hold a lot of anger inside, this talk is for you.

From Panic to Power: Proven Techniques to Calm Your Anxieties, Conquer Your Fears, and Put You in Control of Your Life

Author: Lucinda Bassett, Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety

Many patients with depression have strong anxieties. Ms. Bassett has a gift to speak plainly, clearly and with joy to help us see where we are creating and propelling our own negative thoughts. This book is really a good introduction to her longer anxiety program of CD's, books and videos.

Who Should Read to This: Anyone who has a lot of anxiety and /or panic attacks.

Self-Esteem: Your Fundamental Power

Author: Dr. Caroline Myss, Sounds True, Incorporated 2006

Self-esteem is crucial for positive thinking. Dr. Myss makes a good argument that it may be the fundamental underpinning of most challenges we face. Carolyn Myss is a master at allowing yourself to look objectively at your patterns and thoughts, in order to reveal negative thoughts and self-esteem challenges.

Who Should Listen to This: Pretty much everyone, but especially anyone who looks down on themselves, and believes other people are better they are.

Author: Pema Chödrön, 2010 Shambala Publications

A gentle guide to helping us understand why we maintain certain habits, and how we can look at ourselves without judgment in order to make the changes we need to move forward using greater awareness. A brilliant work and a short, quick read – but I recommend you read each chapter very slowly.

Who Should Read To This: Pretty much everyone, but especially those people who are 'stuck in a rut,' are reactive to situations in a way that leaves them without power, and for those who want to change patterns.
